Virginia peanuts are also known as Ball Park Peanuts or Circus peanuts. They are the plump, large kernel peanuts that became an American staple during the Civil War. With ideal growing conditions in both the South and Central Atlantic regions of the US, both the North and South realized the nutritional value of the “goober, ground nut, chick peas, monkey nuts ….” and distributed peanuts to their troops. On many nights the aroma of roasted peanut wafted from campfires through civil war camps.

"Virginia Peanuts" Continued...

Following the Civil war the popularity of the Virginia peanut grew due to two unique activities; Baseball and the Circus! The call, “Hot Roasted Peanuts”, was first heard in the late 1800’s at P.T. Barnum’s circus. Desire for Virginia peanuts spread as circus wagons traveled across the country. Baseball stadiums began to sell Virginia peanuts by the bagful in the late 1800’s. One ballpark owner threatened to bar peanuts from his park because it cost too much to sweep out the hulls. The fan’s caused such uproar that the park owner not only reversed his decision but gave Virginia peanuts away at games.

It may be difficult to find street vendors for the most luscious Virginia peanuts today however you can find them here at High Mesa.
